ANPS Programs

Gifted and Talented

ANPS provides for the special needs of gifted and talented students through:

  • Classroom programs that cater for a range of abilities;
  • Special interest and extension programs;
  • The recommendation of extra curriculum activities outside school; and
  • The challenge program and specialist teacher.

Class teachers continually assess student learning needs as well as differentiating and refining their teaching and learning programs. These processes are exacting and ongoing. Our teachers work hard to cater for the individual learning needs of the children within their care.

The Challenge Program

This specialist program is designed to cater for our intellectually gifted students as well as providing support for class teachers in catering for these students.

Standardised testing has provided additional information about each of our students and complements student identification and recommendation by teachers.

Groupings and the teaching of the Challenge program will be flexible and responsive to the needs of students and their class program.

Students meet weekly in mixed-age groups of between 8 and 14 students for programs that are designed with their particular abilities and needs in mind. The groups are taught by our specialist teacher, Sandra Simpson.

Italian

Students from K-6 receive weekly lessons in Italian.

K-2 will receive 1 ½ hours per week

3-6 will receive 2 hours per week

The program has a strong conversational emphasis.

The Italian program is jointly funded by parents, P&C, Co.As.It. Sydney (an Italian social welfare organisation) and the school.

Debating

Annandale North enters a debating competition against 9 other local schools.

Debating provides an opportunity for senior students to work cooperatively in a team situation and utilise their leadership skills. The debating squad consists of two teams (negative and affirmative). Debates are held in Terms 2 and 3.

Each year the school enters students from Years 3-6 in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition conducted by the DET.

Chess

Weekly afternoon chess lessons are conducted by the Chess Academy. These lessons are available for students of all ages.

The lunch time chess club is operated by interested teachers and is open to all students K-6 who want to play for enjoyment or practice.
